With football season right around the corner, UNC will move forward with limited fan attendance at Kenan Stadium and no season tickets amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In a message to UNC season ticket holders, athletic director Bubba Cunningham and Rams Club executive director John Montgomery outlined how the 2020-21 football season will look different.

“The health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff, visitors and Carolina Community will continue to be our priority as we continue to make decisions about fall sports and how we may welcome you back to campus,” said the message.

In the fall, the fan capacity for Kenan Stadium will be reduced although the message does not state by how much. Kenan Stadium currently holds 51,000 fans and the Tar Heels sold out every home game last season in Mack Brown’s first season back in Chapel Hill.

The message said UNC Athletics is “planning for multiple scenarios and will continue to work with University and state officials as well as health experts to determine the appropriate level of capacity, which may vary throughout the season.”

Several other sports leagues, such as the WNBA and MLB, have resumed play in recent weeks with no fans in the stands.

Brown told reporters earlier this month that he expects college football to still be played in the fall.

“I expect us to play college football this fall,” UNC’s head coach said. “It’ll be determined by medical staffs across the country. And how safe are the players? How safe are the staffs? How safe are the fans? That’s still fluid.”

As a result of reduced stadium capacity and social distancing guidelines, no season tickets will distributed this year.

Fans who purchased season tickets will have the option to donate the purchase as a potentially deductible gift, roll over the purchase to the 2021 season, or receive a refund.

An individual ticket request system will be used for the 2020-21 football season. Additionally, all tickets will be distributed digitally to ensure contact-free entry to UNC athletic games.

The message also said more details about other fall sports — such as soccer and field hockey — will be shared in the coming days.

UNC’s football team resumed workouts last week after an outbreak of coronavirus within the athletics program forced the team to pause.
