The fifth-ranked UNC baseball team improved to 10-1 to start the 2019 campaign on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium, after winning both games of a doubleheader against the UMass Lowell Riverhawks.

UNC won the first game with a 5-0 shutout, before exploding offensively in the second game for a 14-7 victory.

Junior right-hander Gianluca Dalatri was the key component of the first game for the Tar Heels, as he threw 7.1 shutout innings and allowed just two hits.

A solo home run from Jackson Hesterlee in the bottom of the second inning put UNC ahead for good, as Dalatri and the bullpen dominated their way through the UMass Lowell lineup.

In the second game, star outfielder Michael Busch hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning–his third home run of the season–to help the Tar Heels put together another wire-to-wire victory.

Busch was one of five UNC hitters to have two RBIs in the game, joining Cody Roberts, Danny Serretti, Tom Caufield and Dylan Harris.

Seven runs in the second inning and four more in the third had UNC ahead 13-0 early in the game–a lead that provided some insurance and then some for starting pitcher Tyler Baum.

Baum threw six innings, while allowing just one run and four hits. He also struck out nine hitters.

The Riverhawks did manage to score six runs in the top of the seventh inning, but by that point the damage had already been done.

As a result, the visitors’ record for the season fell to 0-9.
