Home runs by Aaron Sabato and Jake Holtzapple helped lead the UNC baseball team to an 8-3 victory over the VCU Rams on Wednesday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium, giving the Tar Heels their third win in a row.

Both Sabato and Holtzapple blasted two-run shots in the sixth inning to extend the Tar Heels’ lead from 2-1 to 6-1–providing the bullpen with all the insurance it would need to seal the deal over the final three frames.

The Rams (8-4) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but UNC (10-4) responded with two more runs in its half of the inning to give the game its final score.

Despite allowing VCU to plate three runs, the Tar Heel pitching staff limited the visitors to just four hits on the day.

“I really thought today was one of our most impressive wins of the season,” head coach Mike Fox said afterwards. “Coming off of the weekend – we had a long day Sunday of traveling – had a four-hour game last night, I just didn’t know what to expect today. I thought it was one of our more complete games, other than a miscue at third, I thought we pitched well, only struck out one time and got a couple of big home runs. Today was a good win against a good club for us.”
