Another stellar defensive effort guided the top-seeded UNC women’s lacrosse team to a 9-4 victory over No. 2 seed Syracuse on Sunday at Dorrance Field, giving the Tar Heels their fifth straight ACC Tournament championship.
Jamie Ortega had three goals and two assists to lead UNC offensively, while goalie Taylor Moreno earned ACC Tournament MVP honors after holding Syracuse (14-3) to its lowest scoring total of the season.
The Tar Heels also received two goals from Melissa Sconone and a goal and an assist from all-time leading scorer Katie Hoeg.
Syracuse scored the game’s first goal, before UNC piled on the next three goals to take a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.
The Orange’s last goal came with 15:25 remaining and made the score 6-4 in favor of the Tar Heels. UNC would go on to score the final three goals of the afternoon.
With the win, UNC improves to 18-0 this season and has won its last 25 games overall–a program record. It was also the Tar Heels’ 15th consecutive ACC Tournament win, setting a new conference record.
