The top-ranked UNC field hockey team began its pursuit of a third straight NCAA title with a 2-0 victory over No. 13 Stanford on Sunday in Chapel Hill, a quarterfinal victory that earned the Tar Heels their 12th straight Final Four appearance.

Cassie Sumfest scored on a penalty corner late in the first half to give UNC the lead, before ACC Offensive Player of the Year Erin Matson added an insurance goal with just under three minutes remaining to seal up the win.

UNC is now 17-1 this season and has won 64 of its last 65 games over the last three years. Stanford, meanwhile, finishes the season with a record of 11-3.

The Tar Heels finished Sunday’s game with 16 shots while holding Stanford to just six on the other end.
