Bryn Boylan scored on a penalty stroke just over three minutes into the second overtime period on Friday afternoon in Chapel Hill, lifting the top-ranked UNC field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Wake Forest.

The win secured the ACC’s automatic bid to the 2020 NCAA Tournament for UNC, which improves to 16-1 for the season. It also marks the Tar Heels’ fourth consecutive game ending in an overtime victory.

After Wake Forest scored first on a goal by Maggie Dickman in the 11th minute of action, the Tar Heels responded with an equalizer from three-time reigning ACC Offensive Player of the Year Erin Matson–her 25th goal of the season.

The teams took that 1-1 tie into halftime, but UNC came flying out of the gates after the break–with Cassie Sumfest scoring less than two minutes into the third quarter.

Wake Forest rallied to tie the game back at 2-2 late in the quarter with a goal from Immie Gillgrass, which would ultimately be the last time either side would score for the next 30 minutes of play.

Given the opportunity to win the game on the penalty stroke in double overtime, Boylan did not disappoint–scoring her second double-overtime game-winner of the season, matching her penalty stroke winner against Duke back on April 2.
