The top-ranked UNC field hockey team set a new ACC record on Friday evening in Winston Salem, defeating the No. 20 Wake Forest Demon Deacons 3-1 for what was the Tar Heels’ 36th consecutive victory.

That streak dates back to 2017, as UNC went 23-0 last season on the way to the national championship.

Marissa Creatore scored twice in the first half–both times assisted by Erin Matson–to give UNC a 2-0 lead at halftime, while Matson added her 21st goal of the season at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

Wake Forest (6-8, 0-4 ACC) didn’t get on the board until the final five minutes of the game when Ann van Hoof scored off of a penalty corner.

This year’s Tar Heels are now 13-0 overall with a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play.

After the game, head coach Karen Shelton wanted no part of talking about the team’s record winning streak.

“The only thing we talked about was the fact that it doesn’t really matter at all and that what we care about is the next game,” Shelton said. “Already we’re thinking about Liberty. You’re only as good as your next one. Streaks don’t matter, and undefeated seasons don’t really matter, in the grand scheme of things. It’s about us improving, getting better, and preparing for the postseason.”
