Bobby Gersten, who was the oldest living UNC athlete, passed away Friday morning. He was 99 years old.

Gersten, a 1942 UNC graduate, was captain of the Tar Heels basketball and baseball teams as a senior and won the Patterson Medal as Carolina’s top student-athlete that year. After college, Gersten served in the Air Force during World War II.

More recently, Gersten was very active around the Chapel Hill and UNC campus communities.

He co-founded UNC’s “Walk for Health,” an annual event at the school to promote healthy lifestyles and physical fitness for all ages. Gersten took pride in leading the walk for many years. He also was outspoken against the confederate monument Silent Sam, saying it should be removed from campus during an interview in 2018.

Gersten had retired to Chapel Hill 10 years ago and was living in The Cedars.
