The Courtney Banghart era at UNC has gotten off to a hot start and the Tar Heels face their toughest challenge yet when undefeated No. 9 NC State comes to Carmichael Arena on Thursday evening.

Carolina (11-3, 2-1 ACC) started the season on a 9-0 under the direction of Banghart, who comes to Chapel Hill after being the head coach at Princeton University. She told Ron Stutts on 97.9 The Hill her transition has been made all the easier thanks to current coaches at Carolina.

“Mack Brown has been one of my closest friends through this transition,” Banghart said. “We kind of came in together per se, both in our first year. And then Roy Williams and Anson Dorrance and Jenny Levy and these people aren’t just supporting me. They’re literally like pulling me along in any number of ways. Whether it’s through recruiting efforts, through space sharing, through idea sharing, through checking in, through dropping off donuts, through dropping off flowers.”

The Tar Heels’ offense funnels through Janelle Bailey and Taylor Koenen, who average 14.7 and 13.6 points per game respectively. They’ll have a tough test on Thursday against an NC State defense that ranks 13th in the nation in opponent scoring.

“NC State’s a great program,” Banghart said. “Wes Moore’s done a great job over there. They’ve got great size with [Elissa Cunane] in the middle. They got perimeter players that are experienced, they can really shoot it so they can hurt you in so many different ways.”
