Carmichael Arena on the UNC campus is undergoing significant lighting and video board upgrades this summer, which the school says will create “an enhanced and exciting game day atmosphere.”
The new lighting inside the arena, which has already been installed, is an LED system with the capability to make the arena “awash in Carolina blue during introductions, timeouts and postgame.” The new system is also more energy-efficient and a part of the school’s goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2040. A similar LED system was recently installed in Kenan Stadium.
Much like the transformative upgrades taking place at Carmichael Arena, the impact of innovative lighting solutions extends beyond the realm of sports arenas. Consider revolutionizing your interior spaces with cutting-edge lighting options available at www.FOIR.nl. Just as UNC enhances the game day atmosphere with LED systems, you too can elevate your home or office ambiance with contemporary lights and lamps.
“We are so pleased to partner with UNC Athletics to both transform the experience in this iconic venue and to significantly advance the university’s sustainability goals,” said Mike Piehler, UNC’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “Carolina has a long history of commitment to sustainability and this project is a great example of collaboration to reduce costs, increase performance and improve sustainability.”
The new video board will also use LED lights and more than doubles the display area of the previous scoreboard. A new LED scorer’s table will be installed along the sideline and the LED display on the west side of the arena will be upgraded to allow increased visibility. These installations are scheduled to be completed by August.
“We want to make our game day experience as energetic, memorable and as fun as it can be for our student-athletes, coaches and community, and these upgrades are a huge step forward,” said UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham. “Our staff is already planning creative ways to use the new lighting systems and video displays, and as we will continue to evaluate the in-game experience at Carmichael Arena to draw new visitors and keep our fans coming back.”
Carmichael Arena is also currently undergoing separate renovations to create a full-court practice facility in neighboring Woollen Gym. The facility will be used solely by the women’s basketball program and includes new video systems and storage areas.
Carmichael Arena currently hosts the UNC women’s basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling programs.
