Despite getting 19 points and eight assists from guard Shayla Bennett on Thursday night in Myrtle Beach, the UNC women’s basketball team came up just short in an 86-81 loss in overtime to the Auburn Tigers.
Paris Kea and Stephanie Watts each added 16 points for the Tar Heels (8-5), but it was not enough to overcome their 11-point third-quarter deficit.
Although UNC was able to rally and force the extra period–even going ahead by four points in the fourth quarter–Auburn (10-1) managed to claw back and take back control of the proceedings.
Unique Thompson scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Tigers, who didn’t shoot the ball particularly well–but did force the Tar Heels into a whopping 27 turnovers.
The loss snapped what had been a three-game winning streak for UNC.
