The second episode of the ACC Network’s “All-Access with Carolina Basketball” television show aired on Tuesday, giving UNC fans a look into Carolina’s preseason routine.
Here are five takeaways from the second episode:
- Roy Williams is not a fan of having cameras around the team at all times. “It stinks,” he said when asked about the program during his weekly radio show. Williams said he thought the ACC Network was only going to film the preseason. “Dean Smith turned over in his grave eight times,” he said, joking that the legendary UNC head coach would never allow this kind of access within the program.
- Williams continues to refuse comparisons between himself and Smith. “I’ll never be the Coach that Coach Smith was,” Williams said during ACC Media Days in Charlotte.
- UNC assistant coach Hubert Davis said Cole Anthony’s presence on the team makes him feel old. Davis played with Anthony’s father — Greg Anthony — on the New York Knicks in his time with in the NBA. Now, Davis is coaching the younger Anthony in college.
- Cole Anthony first beat his dad in one-on-one when he was 13-years old. Anthony has always been a top basketball prospect, but it wasn’t until his teenage years that he was able to beat his father, who was selected with the 12th overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft by the Knicks and played nearly a decade in the NBA.
- The show only got through UNC’s wins over Notre Dame and UNC-Wilmington, but spent some time focusing on the relationship between Williams and UNC-Wilmington head coach C.B. McGrath. McGrath played for Williams at Kansas and then spent over a decade as an assistant coach at UNC. He took the UNC-Wilmington job in 2017 as his first head coaching opportunity. The ACC Network showed the similarities between Williams and McGrath, from their coaching styles to the daily words of wisdom they both preach during practice.
