After a crushing loss to rival Duke on Saturday, UNC couldn’t muster the energy required to take on Wake Forest in Winston-Salem and fell 74-57 to the Demon Deacons.
The Tar Heels (10-14, 3-10) now sit at the bottom of the ACC with Miami. Wake Forest (11-13, 4-10) was the cellar dweller in the conference, but the win puts them ahead of UNC in the standings.
Carolina never led as Wake Forest came out of the gates hot and took a 20-point lead into halftime. The Demon Deacons increased their lead to 26 points in the second half (a season-low for UNC), before the Tar Heels mounted a late comeback. UNC cut the deficit to nine points, but Wake Forest held on in the end to secure the win.
It was a stark comparison from the UNC team that suited up in Chapel Hill on Saturday. Against the Blue Devils, UNC looked competitive and full of energy. Against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, the Tar Heels played uninspired at times.
The Tar Heels are now 0-4 since the return of Cole Anthony. The freshman scored 15 points on 5-of-19 shooting (0-of-6 from three) in addition seven turnovers, six rebounds and four assists. Christian Keeling (15 points) was the only other Tar Heel to score in double figures.
UNC returns to Chapel Hill to host Virginia on Saturday. Earlier this season, Virginia defeated Carolina 56-47 but the Cavaliers have lost five of their last nine conference games.
