Beating Duke is a high point in any UNC season, and the men’s golf team wasted no time checking that box off their list. The Tar Heels won the team title at the Rod Myers Invitational last weekend, hosted by the Duke University Golf Club. Carolina’s Ryan Gerard also placed first individually, winning by two strokes.

The Tar Heels overcame a late lead for NC State with birdies from Gerard, Austin Greaser, Peter Fountain and David Ford over the last three holes to seal the victory. Carolina’s final score of -27, three under the Wolfpack at -24, is the second-best finish in the history of the tournament. Duke finished third and UNC-Greensboro finished fourth. It is the eighth time the Tar Heels have won a team title in head coach Andrew DiBetto’s five years with the program.

“Winning in our sport is hard,” DiBetto said Sunday. “You always know you are going to face adversity and that came today on the back nine. At one point we were two or three shots behind. We’ve built this thing where our guys just understand composure, they understand patience, they understand what to do when the adversity hits. Our guys were great, they executed down the stretch and came out with two wins.”

Gerard won the individual title in a tight final round with NC State’s Maximilian Steinlechner. Gerard moved to one shot ahead on the 17th hole, then birdied 18 to put the title out of reach.

“I knew [Steinlechner] tied me and I knew it was pretty close team-wise,” Gerard said after the tournament. “I just hit the best putt I could and it went right in the center and my boys were there for me and we were screaming and having a good time. It was a lot of fun down the stretch.”

Over the three-day tournament, Gerard finished with a -15 score, matching the lowest individual score in tournament history. It is also the fifth-best mark in the history of the UNC men’s golf program.

“I’m super proud of Ryan, very happy for him,” said DiBitetto. “Every time I looked back he just looked cool, calm, collected. Very composed, very clutch. A big-time win for him.”

Gerard was one of three Tar Heels to finish in the top eight of the field.

Carolina will hope to extend their positive start into their next tournament, the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational this weekend.
