The UNC men’s golf team won two dramatic rounds of match play at the ACC Championship Monday in Charlotte to clinch the program’s 12th conference title, first since 2006 and first outright championship since 1996 (the 2006 title was shared with Georgia Tech). It’s the sixth ACC title in total won by a Tar Heel team this academic year.
After finishing in first place in the three-round stroke play portion of the championship during the weekend, Carolina entered the four-team match play portion on Monday as the No. 1 seed. Austin Greaser was UNC’s highest individual finisher in stroke play, tying for third at six-under par. Peter Fountain finished two-under to tie for eighth. As a team, the Tar Heels finished 10-under to win stroke play by six shots.
The first round of match play on Monday saw Carolina face No. 4 seed Wake Forest in the semifinals. Dylan Menante cruised in his match, winning 7&6 to put the Tar Heels on the board. Greaser won his match to put Carolina one point away, but the match came down to the final hole. With the teams tied at 2-2, Maxwell Ford held on at No. 18 to secure the 3-2 win.
In a short turnaround, Carolina faced No. 2 seed Florida State in the championship later in the afternoon. Menante the first match of the championship, but Greaser and David Ford each earned 2&1 victories in theirs, meaning either Maxwell Ford or Fountain could clinch the title. Fountain did the honors, sinking a clutch putt on the 17th hole to seal his 2&1 win and kick off the celebration.
The win is Carolina’s seventh this season, tying a program record set in the 1982-83 season. It’s also the first ACC title for the team under head coach Andrew DiBitetto. UNC had lost in match play in both 2021 and 2022, and failed to qualify out of stroke play in 2023.
Up next for the Tar Heels are the NCAA Regionals. Carolina will host a regional at the newly-renovated Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill this year. The full field of teams will be announced on April 26, with regional play starting on May 13.
