The UNC men’s golf team fell to Florida State in the NCAA match play quarterfinals in California on Thursday. Carolina’s season is over.

Dylan Menante provided UNC with its only point of the match, defeating his FSU opponent 2&1 to give Carolina an early lead. But Peter Fountain and Austin Greaser each took 2&1 defeats in the second and third matches of the day, and David Ford fell 3&2 in the fourth to give the Seminoles the win. Maxwell Ford led by one through 15 holes when his match was stopped.

The match is the last in the Carolina careers of both Menante and Greaser, who are out of collegiate eligibility. Peter Fountain is a graduating senior but can use his fifth “COVID” year to return next fall.

Though UNC has qualified for NCAA match play in each of the last four seasons, this is the third time in that time span the Tar Heels have lost in the quarterfinals. Carolina reached the semifinals in 2023. The UNC men’s golf program is still seeking its first national championship in program history.
