The UNC men’s golf team placed third at 20-under par in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at Finley Golf Club on Wednesday, cementing its place in the NCAA Championship for the seventh straight season. On the individual side, Carolina’s Austin Greaser shot 13-under par to claim the title. It’s the second time Greaser has won a regional crown.
First-place Clemson (25-under), second-place East Tennessee State (24-under), fourth-place Georgia Tech (17-under) and fifth-place Baylor (15-under) will also advance out of the regional.
Carolina held a two-shot lead after Monday’s first round, but slipped to third in the second, which was also played on Monday due to predicted rain later in the week. The teams began the third round on Tuesday, but quickly had to suspend play due to heavy rains. The round was completed on Wednesday.
Greaser shot a four-under 66 in the first round, a five-under 65 in the second and another four-under 66 in the third on his way to medalist honors. The fifth-year senior beat out Baylor’s Johnny Keefer and NC State’s Nick Matthews by one stroke, and a long birdie putt by Greaser on the 18th hole proved to be the decider.
Greaser, who is playing in his final season for the Tar Heels, also won medalist honors at the NCAA Yale Regional in 2022. Maxwell Ford (four-under) tied for 18th, while Peter Fountain (two-under) tied for 21st.
Carolina will now join 29 other teams at the NCAA Championship, which will be played at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, CA beginning on May 24. The championship begins with four rounds of stroke play (the 30 teams are cut to 15 after the first three rounds), with the top eight finishers advancing to the match play portion of the event. UNC is seeking its first national championship in men’s golf after reaching the national semifinals in match play last season.
