The UNC men’s golf team snagged its first tournament win of the season Tuesday afternoon, winning the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, TX by nine strokes.

A trio of Tar Heels finished in the top eight of the individual leaderboard: senior Austin Greaser, sophomore David Ford and Pepperdine transfer Dylan Menante. The win is the 11th under head coach Andrew DiBitetto, who is in his sixth year as UNC head coach.

Carolina tied for or placed first outright in each of the tournament’s three rounds, shooting an eight-under 272 as a team in the second round, which tied for the lowest round by a team for the entire event. Each of UNC’s three rounds were below a total score of 280, which no other team in the field accomplished.

Greaser was Carolina’s best finisher, shooting a six-under 204 over three rounds — including a 66 in the second round — and tying for third. It’s Greaser’s eighth top-five finish in a college tournament. Ford shot four-under and Menante three-under. Ryan Burnett (one-under) and Peter Fountain (two-over) rounded out the UNC quintet in Texas.

The field for the Ben Hogan Invitational included six top-1o teams: No. 1 Vanderbilt, No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 6 Texas Tech and No. 9 Georgia Tech. Defending national champion Texas also competed in the event, finishing eighth overall and 23 strokes behind the Tar Heels.

The men’s golf team will be back in action at the Stephens Cup in Juno Beach, FL, which begins October 10.
