The UNC cross country team continued its hot start to the season, with the men taking first place by a single point over second-place Villanova at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, PA, Friday morning.

Freshman Parker Wolfe, competing in just his second college race and fresh off winning ACC Freshman of the Week, finished first among UNC competitors and fifth overall.

In cross country competitions, the placements of all team runners are added up, with the highest numbers on each team being eliminated. Whoever finishes with the lowest score wins the team competitions. Though Villanova runners placed second, third and seventh, Carolina placed four runners between eighth and 19th. Their total score of 56 points just beat out the Wildcats, who finished with 57.

The top four of UNC, Villanova, Princeton and Utah State finished far ahead of every other team in the competition, with no other side finishing within 100 points of the foursome.

This race marks the fifth victory in five races for the men’s and women’s cross country teams, and the third on the year for the men after the Charlotte Opener and the Adidas XC Challenge in September. The men’s team is ranked No. 23 in the most recent poll from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, tied with Villanova. Utah State is ranked No. 16.

The Tar Heel men will next be in action the morning of Friday, October 15 when they take part in the Nuttycombe Invitational, hosted by No. 14 Wisconsin. The women will compete that same morning in the FSU XC Invite in Tallahassee, FL.
