Another summer, another UNC golfer making his mark in the U.S. Amateur. Dylan Menante won his round of 32 match at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. Thursday morning, defeating Carson Lundell.

Menante, a senior transfer from Pepperdine, trailed by one after the first nine holes, but won on holes 14 and 17 to take a slim lead going into 18. Lundell made par, but Menante matched it to take the win, 1 up. Menante will now face Maxwell Moldovan in the round of 16.

Menante was one of five Carolina golfers to enter the tournament, including last year’s runner-up Austin Greaser, but is the last Tar Heel standing. Only he and junior Peter Fountain qualified for the 64-man match play portion of the tournament, which began Wednesday. Two rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday determined who advanced to match play.

Menante arrived in Chapel Hill after three decorated seasons competing for Pepperdine. In the 2020-21 season, Menante led the Waves to an NCAA title while winning West Coast Conference Player of the Year. He won the award again in 2021-22, and the Waves very nearly went back-to-back, falling in the national semifinals.

The winner of the U.S. Amateur will earn invitations to both the Masters and the U.S. Open in 2023.
