UNC rising sophomore David Ford is keeping his game sharp during the summer. Ford shot a final-round 65 to win the Southern Amateur golf tournament in St. Simons Island, GA, on Saturday. He made four birdies in the final six holes to overcome a three-stroke deficit at the beginning of the day.

Ford shot in the 60s in three of the four rounds, including a second-round 62 (nine under par). It ties his lowest career round at any tournament, collegiate or amateur.

Ford is coming off a terrific freshman season for head coach Andrew DiBitetto and the Tar Heels. He was named a member of the Golf Coaches Association of America’s All-Freshman team and the ACC Freshman of the Year. In addition, Ford tied for fifth place in stroke play at the NCAA Championship earlier this summer, earning him All-America status. Though Carolina fell in the quarterfinals to Pepperdine, Ford won his match in comeback fashion.

Ford is currently ranked at No. 18 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, though that ranking may rise in the coming weeks.
