UNC junior Austin Greaser completed his first official round at The Masters tournament in Augusta, GA, Thursday afternoon, shooting a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 43rd place on the leaderboard at the time of publication.

Greaser is competing at The Masters due to his runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur Championship this past summer, and has also secured an invitation to compete at the U.S. Open in Brookline, MA, later this year.

Greaser began the round in strong form, sinking three birdies in the first nine holes to tie for first place at 1-under par through the first half of the round. He struggled more in the back half, shooting three bogies to finish at 2-over. With Greaser in his three-man grouping were 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir and three-time major champion Padraig Harrington. UNC men’s golf head coach Andrew DiBitetto is caddying for Greaser over the weekend.

At just 21 years old, this is Greaser’s first appearance at The Masters, or any major PGA tournament. Due to his collegiate status, he is still competing as an amateur in Augusta. Greaser is currently ranked as the No. 13 amateur in the world by Golfweek and the No. 51 collegiate player. He is Carolina’s all-time leader in stroke average at 71.39, and earned All-ACC and honorable mention All-America honors last season.

The second round of The Masters will begin Friday morning at 8:30 a.m.
