Less than 24 hours after moving to 6-1, the UNC football team made its debut in the AP Top 25 poll. The Tar Heels are ranked No. XX, their first ranking since Week 3 of last season.

Joining Carolina in the Top 25 are ACC peers Clemson at No. 5, Wake Forest at No. 13, Syracuse at No. 14 and NC State at No. 23. The Tar Heels will play at the Demon Deacons on November 12 and host the Wolfpack on November 25, but are not scheduled to play either the Tigers or the Orange in the regular season. UNC’s 6-1 start is its best since the 2015 season, when the team won its only Coastal Division title and appeared in the top 10 of the College Football Playoff poll. Particularly impressive is Carolina’s 4-0 mark on the road, a complete flip from the team’s 0-7 mark away from Kenan Stadium last season. The Tar Heels and Clemson are the only two teams in FBS college football with four road wins.

At 3-0 in the conference, Carolina also controls its own destiny in the Coastal Division. After the upcoming bye week, UNC will face three teams it lost to in 2021 in the final five weeks of the season: Pittsburgh (October 29), Georgia Tech (November 19) and NC State (November 25). All three of those games will be played in Chapel Hill. A road game at Virginia (November 5) and the aforementioned contest at Wake Forest round out UNC’s remaining schedule.
