A pair of Tar Heels will be playing in one of tennis’ most hallowed events.
William Blumberg and Nicholas Monroe are part of two separate doubles teams which will compete at Wimbledon this week. The gentlemen’s doubles portion of the tournament is set to begin Thursday.
Monroe played at UNC from 2001 through 2004, winning the ACC title in 2002 and being named a program letterman. He turned pro after graduating from Carolina and has 152 career doubles wins and four titles to his name. Monroe reached a career-high world ranking of No. 30 in 2017. Monroe and partner J.P. Smith reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open that year.
Monroe has since partnered with fellow American Tommy Paul, with whom he reached the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2020. Monroe and Paul will be competing together once again at Wimbledon this year. Their first-round match will be against the pair of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Tomislav Brkic.
Blumberg will be appearing at Wimbledon as a professional for the first time, after playing in the juniors tournament in 2016. Blumberg played at Carolina from 2017 through 2021, becoming one of the most decorated players in program history. He was named an ITA All-American a record 10 times, winning the singles championship in 2017 and finishing second in doubles that same season. He reached the championship match in the NCAA singles tournament in 2017, was named ACC Player of the Year in 2018 and helped the men’s tennis team win the ITA Indoor National Championship in 2020.
Blumberg will compete at Wimbledon with Norway’s Casper Ruud, who is ranked currently ranked No. 6 in the world in singles. Ruud reached the singles final of the French Open earlier this month. In doubles, Ruud reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year. Blumberg and Ruud will face the pairing of Nicolas Barrientos and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela in their first-round match.
