Six businesses in Chapel Hill could face fines for selling alcohol to an underage buyer as part of a Chapel Hill Police Department operation last weekend.

Police regularly hold operations to check compliance with the state Alcoholic Beverage Control, or ABC, commission, which the department ran on Saturday. Of 20 businesses checked during evening hours, six sold alcoholic drinks to an underage customer who was working with police.

The six businesses who received citations are: Kahlovera, Lime & Lemon, Lucha Tigre, Old East Tavern, Rasa and the Speedway convenience store off of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

“As with all of our operations, education is extremely important to the Police Department,” said Chapel Hill Police Public Information Officer Alex Carrasquillo. “We want businesses to do well, and we work closely with them to make sure they have practices in place to avoid selling alcohol to people who are underage. The educational effort includes ‘Be A Responsible Seller (B.A.R.S.)’ training conducted throughout the year by an officer who serves as an ALE liaison. The training educates bartenders or others who are serving alcohol in their job roles.”

Carrasquillo also pointed to the police department’s social media posts ahead of each alcohol compliance check to give business owners time to have conversations with their employees.

The six businesses cited for violations will still be able to continue serving alcohol, but will be reported to the ABC Commission. Chapel Hill Police said the commission could fine businesses around $1,000 for first offenses, with repeat offenders facing fines closer to $2,500.
