Shake Shack, one of the Eastgate Crossing businesses closed due to flood damage from Tropical Depression Chantal in July, said it is set to reopen on Wednesday, November 19.
“After months of restoration following severe flooding, our Chapel Hill Shack is reopening and our team is back in place,” said Sean Anderson, Area Director at Shake Shack in a press release. “We look forward to seeing familiar faces and welcoming the people that make Chapel Hill so special.”
The release said the restaurant will hold a ribbon-cutting event with the Chamber of Commerce starting at 10:30 a.m. on November 19. During the event, $1 of every sandwich purchase will be donated to PORCH, a local non-profit fighting hunger.
Shake Shack in Eastgate first opened its doors to the public in December of 2022. When floodwaters hit businesses in the shopping center in July, Shake Shack sustained heavy damage. According to a release from the restaurant, the building took on “several feet of water.”

In its release, the restaurant said it is excited to not just welcome back patrons, but its returning workers.
“As doors reopen, Shake Shack is especially proud to welcome back many of its original Chapel Hill team members who helped build the Shack’s community presence before the storm,” the release read. “The Company worked closely with its People team to support impacted employees through temporary transfers and ensuring they had the opportunity to return once the Shack was ready.”
While in the process of repairing the Chapel Hill location, the company was also raising money to help support statewide recovery efforts. In the immediate aftermath of the Chantal’s flash floods, Shake Shack donated $1 from every purchase across its North Carolina company-owned locations to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, helping feed families and first responders impacted by the extreme weather.
The restaurant is the latest flood-damaged business at Eastgate Crossing to reopen, following the Great Outdoor Provision Co. at the end of October and several others in September. Check out Chapelboro’s most recent “Mind Your Business” round-up of local business news for more.
