It was not possible for the UNC women’s soccer team’s first-round match in the ACC Tournament against Pitt to end in a 1-1 draw, but the Tar Heels tried hard to make that happen.

Carolina and the Panthers were even at a goal apiece after 90 minutes at Dorrance Field. The Panthers had struck first in the 73rd minute, but Ally Sentnor equalized barely three minutes later. Despite that burst of momentum, Pitt controlled most of the chances during regulation, outshooting the Tar Heels 17-9 and 9-4 in the second half. UNC came out on the front foot in extra time with five shots in the first 15-minute period, but it was the visitors who found the eventual winner in the 99th minute and held the lead for the rest of the way. Ironically, had the match been played in the regular season, it would’ve gone down as UNC’s fifth 1-1 draw in the last six matches.

The result – besides being the team’s first loss of the season – brings Carolina’s ACC Tournament campaign to an early halt after the team made it to the championship match in 2022. Now, UNC will await its draw in the NCAA Tournament and look to make it back to the College Cup for the second consecutive season. The tournament field will be announced on November 6, and matches will begin on November 10.
