Both UNC soccer teams earned quality results on the road Thursday night, as the men drew at No. 5 Georgetown and the women won 2-0 at Arkansas.

On the men’s side, the Tar Heels took an early advantage in the season opener after Rutgers transfer Joschi Schelb headed in a cross from Luca Nikolai for his first UNC goal. Carolina’s 1-0 lead lasted into the second half before the Hoyas found an equalizer in the 60th minute. UNC had plenty of chances to steal a late winner, as Schelb, Nikolai and Vermont transfer Nick Lockermann all had shots saved in the game’s final 20 minutes. Carolina had to hold on for dear life, too, as keeper Alan Rutkowski saved a late Hoya chance to preserve the 1-1 draw.

The two teams played nearly even statistically: Georgetown finished with nine shots to UNC’s eight, and both teams had six shots on target. The Hoyas held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks, though notably did not take one in the second half.

Carolina will remain on the road for its second game, as the Tar Heels will travel to Memphis Monday at 7 p.m. Eastern time.

On the women’s side, UNC continued its dominant start to the season with a third consecutive shutout victory. The Tar Heels scored each of their two goals in a span of 2:03 in the first half: Summer Denigan slotted home a penalty in the 16th minute before Lilliah Blum fired home a loose ball in the box off a corner kick in the 18th. The goal stood after a VAR review, and UNC nearly added a third goal seconds later on a shot by Denigan.

Carolina outshot Arkansas 10-2 in the first half and 19-5 for the match, only allowing two Razorback shots on target. Keeper Peyton Trayer saved both to preserve the clean sheet.

UNC is now 3-0 on the young season and will return home Sunday to host No. 5 Michigan State at Dorrance Field at 1 p.m. The game will be televised on ACC Network.
