No. 7 Stanford scored in the 82nd minute to break a scoreless tie and send Carolina to its first loss in ACC play this season. The 1-0 defeat snaps a seven-match winning streak for the Tar Heels.

UNC saw more scoring chances in the first half, outshooting the Cardinal 7-2. But Stanford turned up the heat in the second half, amassing 12 shots to just four for the Tar Heels. Goalkeeper Clare Gagne was able to keep the hosts off the scoreboard until the Cardinal’s Shae Harvey struck the decisive blow. It marked the first time Carolina had trailed in the second half since the Tar Heels’ only other loss of the season, back on September 5 at Duke (that match does not count toward Carolina’s conference record).

UNC was not able to send a shot on the Stanford net for the remainder of the afternoon. Carolina’s Olivia Thomas accounted for five of the Tar Heels’ 11 total shots in just 35 minutes.

Carolina drops to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in league play. UNC will return home from its west coast trip to host Clemson at Dorrance Field on Thursday, October 17 at 7 p.m. The program will also celebrate former head coach Anson Dorrance at the match that night.
