Another day, another win away from home for the No. 1 Tar Heels. The UNC women’s soccer team concluded a long three-match road trip Thursday afternoon with a 3-1 win at Missouri. The team had been away from Chapel Hill since last Thursday, when it traveled to Austin, TX to play Texas and Baylor.
Though the Tar Heels conceded a goal for the first time all season, it was more of the same on the offensive side of the ball. The red-hot Avery Patterson netted her fifth goal in five regular-season matches early in the first half, giving Carolina a 1-0 lead just five minutes in. Her five goals in 2022 already match her season total from all of 2021.
Patterson was originally credited with UNC’s second goal in the 19th minute, though the scorer was changed to freshman Tori Dellaperuta. Dellaperuta scored the goal, her second of the season, off an assist from Emily Colton. It’s the second straight match in which Colton has recorded an assist.
Sophomore midfielder Bella Sember scored UNC’s third goal of the first half in the 38th minute. Sember had only taken two shots in UNC’s four previous matches and had scored just once in her career previously.
The 3-0 cushion was more than enough to fend off a spirited effort from the Tigers in the second half. Missouri’s goal in the 60th minute broke a scoreless streak of 419:17 to begin the season for the Tar Heels, but it was all the hosts would get. UNC’s goalkeeping tandem of Emmie Allen and Marz Josephson combined to save the other four shots on goal from the Tigers, and head coach Anson Dorrance, per usual, played a host of substitutes in the win. 22 total players saw at least 10 minutes on the pitch.
Now 5-0, the road warrior Tar Heels will return to the friendly confines of Dorrance Field for the first time in two weeks on Sunday, September 4. The No. 3 UCLA Bruins will meet Carolina for a clash of national championship contenders. Kickoff of that match is scheduled for 12 p.m. It can be seen on ACC Network.
