Several Chatham County communities have been “isolated” due to flooding conditions following heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Florence, according to the county.

Officials said in a Tuesday release that water was blocking some roads and some structures had been flooded, particularly near Indian Creek Estates, Carbonton and Gulf.

“Most of the affected residents had opted not to evacuate, even with water not yet subsiding,” as of 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials said emergency responders had taken precautionary steps to have rescue equipment close and on stand-by in case an evacuation was needed.

“We are still determining the source of the floodwaters,” Chatham County Emergency Management director Steve Newton said in a release. “This water may be from the Deep River itself, from heavy rain runoff without a good way to drain or a combination of sources.  This makes it very hard to know when these residents can expect relief from flooding.”

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has established a detour at US 15-501 south at the Deep River, officials said, due to “concerns about flooding and debris.”

Motorists will be routed to Mountain View Church Road, Moncure Road and US 1 to avoid the potentially dangerous area.
