Drivers may want to make plans for alternative routes around downtown Chapel Hill this summer.
The NC Department of Transportation is scheduled begin street resurfacing in town on Monday, June 11.
Areas affected will be East Franklin Street from South Columbia to Pickard Lane, South Columbia Street from Manning Drive to Franklin Street, Pittsboro Street from Manning Drive to Cameron Avenue and Cameron Avenue from Pittsboro Street to South Columbia Street.
As a result of an agreement by the town and NCDOT staff to avoid daytime and nighttime weekend congestion downtown, work on East Franklin Street from Columbia Street to Boundary Street will take place between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.
All other work in the area will be done between 9 a.m. and sunset Monday through Saturday.
The street resurfacing, which includes adjusting manholes and valve boxes, installing new traffic signal loops, milling, installing permanent thermo pavement markings and high-visibility crosswalks, is expected to be completed before August 10, move-in weekend at UNC.
The resurfacing will not require any detours for Chapel Hill Transit, however, some delays may occur and some stops may be closed temporarily.
