The Town of Hillsborough recently provided updates on its efforts to transition to LED street lighting along the town’s main roads.
The town shared a release with the community on Monday saying Duke Energy crews will begin installing new light fixtures along Churton Street in the coming days. Fixtures between Tryon, Nash and Kollack Streets will be replaced with new energy-efficient LED fixtures throughout the month.
Hillsborough began the lighting replacement in early May. According to town officials, replacing the current sodium and mercury vapor lights with LED ones will not just be cost-efficient, but will also promote environmental consciousness — and requests from merchants in Hillsborough’s commercial areas for improved lighting led to the change to 3,000-kelvin LED fixtures.
Street lighting fixtures on South Nash Street, the commercial section of King Street and the Police Department parking lot are some of the project’s areas already completed.
Through July, motorists in Hillsborough will need to be alert for flaggers directing traffic around work crews as needed on Churton Street, according to the town.
