The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex Tuesday evening.

A release from the town after 9 p.m. confirmed the incident, which took place in the 800 block of Pritchard Avenue Extension around 6:15 p.m., killed one person. Chapel Hill Police are treating the death of 51-year-old resident Michael Deshai Lee as a homicide, with police identifying Lee in a release Wednesday afternoon.

Three others were injured, two of whom were transported to UNC Hospitals for treatment. Wednesday’s update said all three victims are expected to survive.

During the police department’s initial response, law enforcement closed the road. According to the radio broadcast of responding emergency service vehicles, the scene was cleared of victims at 6:49 p.m.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Police Department does not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community despite no arrest or suspect being announced in the case.

The University Gardens housing community was the site of another fatal shooting just one month ago. 19-year-old resident Rahzel Tyreek Jenkins died from gunshot wounds on August 26, with Chapel Hill Police ultimately charging 22-year-old Anthony Wuanya Holman with first-degree murder.

Chapel Hill Police said anyone who may have information about the incident is encouraged to call 911 or the non-emergency Orange County Communications number, which is 919-732-5063. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can also call the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers line at 919-942-7515.
