Police charged a Chapel Hill man with first degree murder on Wednesday after the overnight shooting of another man at the Tyler Creek housing community.
An initial release from the town on Wednesday morning said Chapel Hill Police officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 100 block of Ashley Forest Road at 1:04 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon arrival, the officers found a man with gunshot wounds who was then transported to UNC Hospitals and later died from the injuries.
According to an update from the department on Wednesday afternoon, the victim was 37-year-old Adam Abdur-Rahman of Chapel Hill. Police’s investigation during the day led officers to 45-year-old Mario Chrishunn Thompson, who the department confirmed to Chapelboro is a resident at the Tyler Creek complex. In addition to first degree murder, Thompson is charged with two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property.
Following his arrest, authorities transported Thompson to the Orange County Detention Center where he is being held without bond. He is expected to make his first appearance in court on the charges at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
In its Wednesday afternoon update, Chapel Hill Police said the investigation is ongoing and no additional information is being made publicly available at the time.
Investigators say people are encouraged to call 911 or the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 if they have any further details on Wednesday’s shooting off Ashley Forest Road.
