The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education elected a new chair and vice-chair on Thursday.

The board selected Dr. Jillian La Serna as its new chair and Deon Temne as vice-chair. The pair, who were both elected to the board in 2019, replace Mary-Ann Wolf and Dr. Amy Fowler in the respective positions after Wolf and Fowler both served for a year.

La Serna, former principal of Carrboro Elementary School, currently works as an assistant professor of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She studied cross-cultural language and academic development from California State University – Sacramento before earning her masters of science in administration and Ed.D in Educational Leadership from
the UNC.

Temne, who has served on the School Improvement Teams for both Rashkis Elementary School and Northside Elementary School, is a graduate of the University of Maryland University College. He has also been involved with the CHCCS Equity Advisory Council, Family Commission and Special Needs Advisory Council. Temne is also a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Army.

La Serna and Temne will look to lead the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools board at a time of change for the district. At its previous meeting, CHCCS revealed Dr. Nyah Hamlett to be its new superintendent beginning on January 1. The district is also working toward returning students to in-person instruction for the first time since March amid the coronavirus pandemic.
