Phase 1 and the end of Orange County’s stay at home order will have no affect on Chapel Hill Transit, as the system is continuing its modified services and schedules.
The Town of Chapel Hill’s transit system shared a release Friday ahead of North Carolina entering Phase 1 to share its current bus routes and EZ Rider service are continuing their hours as determined prior to the stay at home order’s enactment. The release said the decision was made between the Chapel Hill Transit partners based on data from the Orange County Health Department and the Town of Chapel Hill Emergency Management team.
“We understand that many people depend on Chapel Hill Transit for access to work, medical appointments, grocery stores and other essential services,” wrote Transit Director Brian Litchfield in the release. “Our priority is the safety of our team members and providing safe service for our customers. We are eager to return our services to normal and see all of customers again. Please continue to be patient as begin reopening our community safely and responsibly.”
Currently, Chapel Hill Transit is running what would normally be just a Saturday service schedule from Mondays through Saturdays. The CM, CW, D, FG, JN, T and V lines are all running, and EZ Rider services are available on Saturday-level service each day of the week and premium service on Sundays.
According to the transit system, the fewer routes allow town employees more time to sanitize each vehicle and to provide more consistency among run times.
Chapel Hill Transit announced the initial alterations to its service back in March, shortly around the first cases of COVID-19 being reported in Orange County.
The full release from Chapel Hill Transit, as well as a full service schedule, can be found on the town government’s website.
