The Town of Chapel Hill may be under a stay-at-home order, but residents outside taking a socially-distanced walk or traveling to pick up food may have noticed a change to some street corners downtown.
The town recently automated its pedestrian crossings on some downtown streets, covering many of the buttons typically used to activate the signal. A post from the town’s official Facebook page indicated the change was made due to residents’ concerns about public health amid the coronavirus outbreak. By automating the processes, no hands should touch the machines and potentially spread germs among pedestrians.
According to the post, about 30 pedestrian signal locations were automated in Chapel Hill. The changes were completed on Friday.
