Town officials announced the full Tracks Music Series on Tuesday, a series of four free concerts every Thursday in September — all featuring local artists spotlighted in the Tracks Music Library, the town’s local music streaming platform.
Concerts will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., near the former Southern Season location on the Estes Drive side of the University Place parking lot. Each concert will feature 45-minute sets from a pair of artists:
September 9 – Hard Drive and Honey Magpie (folk & bluegrass)
September 16 – Heat Preacher and Jack the Radio (rock)
September 23 – Rowdy and KAZE4LETTERS (hip-hop)
September 30 – Katharine Whalen’s Jazz Squad and Dreamroot (jazz)
The Chapel Hill Public Library and Chapel Hill’s Community Arts and Culture Department launched the Tracks Music Library in the spring of 2020, featuring music from nearly 100 Triangle-area artists and bands. Earlier this year, Tracks unveiled “Tracks in the Stacks,” a series of three filmed performances from inside the Chapel Hill Public Library, and 97.9 The Hill has also hosted in-studio performances from many of the featured artists. But the September concerts will be the first live, in-person shows affiliated with the Tracks Music Library.
Chapel Hill officials say they began planning the Tracks Music Series after hearing feedback from residents in a recent community survey.
“We heard from the community that they want more opportunities to hear live, local music, especially in the times we are in,” says Susan Brown, the director of the Chapel Hill Public Library and the Community Arts & Culture Department. “We have this amazing catalog of local acts that people have been streaming on the Tracks platform and this will be a great way to experience these artists in the way they are meant to be heard — live and in person.”
