The Town of Chapel Hill received two lucrative grants this week. Both grants will be used to improve transportation infrastructure within the town.

The first grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration, is worth $2.16 million and will advance the town’s plan to improve local bus stops. There are more than 500 bus stops in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and on the UNC campus, and the grant’s funds will build or enhance accessibility, safety and amenities. Simultaneous improvements on sidewalks, bike lanes, crosswalks and greenways will ensure connectivity throughout the area. It’s part of the town’s larger Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2031.

The second grant came from AARP North Carolina as part of its 2023 Community Challenge. Seven organizations throughout the state received awards. Chapel Hill’s funds will support the installation of pedestrian refuge medians and neighborhood traffic calming apparatus.

“These innovative and cost-effective interventions will serve as a model for other communities pursuing Vision Zero missions to emulate,” said Ian Baltutis, Complete Streets Specialist for the town. “The town recognizes that when we design for the most vulnerable members of our community, we create solutions that are accessible and benefit everyone.”
