UNC women’s tennis head coach Brian Kalbas has agreed to a four-year contract extension which will keep him in Chapel Hill through at least the 2027 season. Kalbas’ Tar Heels are coming off a historic 2023 campaign, one which saw them win their seventh ITA indoor national title and first NCAA team title.

“To be the head women’s tennis coach at North Carolina has been a dream come true for me,” Kalbas said. “I want to thank Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, [athletic director] Bubba Cunningham, the Board of Trustees and everyone within UNC Athletics for allowing me to do what I thoroughly love, and that is coaching here at the University of North Carolina.”

Kalbas’ success with Carolina extends beyond just 2023. He has won a program-record 532 matches with the Tar Heels, is the winningest head coach in ACC women’s tennis history and holds an .800 winning percentage at UNC. His 746 career dual match victories are the most among all active coaches, and he’s one of only four Division 1 women’s coaches to have reached the 700-win plateau. Kalbas has won ACC Coach of the Year six times.

Under Kalbas’ watch, the women’s tennis program has produced seven ACC Players of the Year, two Honda Award winners and two ITA Players of the Year. He has also overseen the transformation of UNC’s outdoor facilities into the world-class Chewning Tennis Center.

“Over the course of 20 years, Coach Brian Kalbas has built and fostered a culture of integrity and success on and off the court,” said Cunningham. “It was truly special to watch him lead his team to the NCAA title, and we look forward to seeing him continue to produce standout players and exceptional people as a Carolina coach.”
