Governor Roy Cooper appointed Hathaway Pendergrass as the newest district court judge in Orange and Chatham Counties on Friday.
A release from the governor’s office confirmed the judicial appointment for Pendergrass, who won the Democratic primary in March for an open District Court Judge position in Judicial District 15B. There were no Republican candidates who filed to run for the position.
“These appointees are valued leaders of their communities and bring a wide range of expertise to the bench,” Cooper said in a release about Pendergrass and Kelvin D. Smith, who was also appointed on Friday in Guilford County. “I am confident that they will serve their districts with fairness and a commitment to justice.”

Hathaway Pendergrass has been appointed as the a district court judge for Chatham County and Orange County.
Judge James T. Bryan III created the vacant seat in the District 15B with his recent retirement.
Pendergrass, a graduate of UNC and the North Carolina Central University School of Law, currently practices at Epting and Hackney Attorneys at Law. He largely focusing on civil litigation and criminal defense and volunteers his services for multiple Orange County organizations. Pendergrass is also a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, Orange County Bar Association, and the North Carolina Advocates for Justice.
