Hathaway Pendergrass won the race for North Carolina District Court Judge Tuesday night.

Pendergrass successfully claimed the seat that was previously held by Judge Jay Bryan, who was forced to retire due to age in January.

Pendergrass was running against Erika Bales, Lamar Proctor and Noah Oswald.

As early voting results came in, Pendergrass had 57 percent of the early vote. By the time all the precinct counts were in, he claimed 54 percent of the vote in Orange County and also won in Chatham County.

Pendergrass is a native of Carrboro and has been working as an attorney with Epting and Hackney. He graduated from Chapel Hill High School before earning an undergraduate degree from UNC and going to law school at North Carolina Central University.

Pendergrass has served on the board of the Orange County Rape Crisis Center, planning boards in Carrboro and Orange County and serves as a teen court judge with Volunteers for Youth diversionary program.
