Chapel Hill community members using the Bolin Creek Greenway may have noticed some recent detours and construction.

The Town of Chapel Hill is working to complete the final stage of construction for the trail’s connector, which has been underway for months. The town said in a release a contractor is “replacing the old asphalt section of the greenway with a more resilient concrete path” between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Bolinwood Drive. The area is known to see flooding following heavy rain.

While this work is underway, segments of the trail have not be accessible and signs providing alternative routes have been set up at nearby entrances to the Bolin Creek Greenway.

According to the Town of Chapel Hill, the entire connector project is expected to be completed later this year, barring any significant rain or inclement weather. The renovation aimed to connect the greenway under the bridge made by Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with a 500-foot section, but it initially stalled as the town removed coal ash deposits from the site. Since then, Chapel Hill has also replaced a footbridge leading to the greenway in the same area and enhanced the path with concrete walkways and new murals.

When complete, the town envisions the Bolin Creek Trail Connector to greatly improve access directly to parks, schools, shopping districts, neighborhoods, and UNC’s campus by foot or bicycle in its greenway system.
