Final steps of Chapel Hill’s Bolin Creek Trail connector construction will lead to a bridge being temporarily closed for repairs.
The Town of Chapel Hill shared a project update on Friday, alerting residents the popular trail will see a trail bridge between Bolinwood Drive and East Franklin Street close as crews replace the wood decking and railings. It’s one of the final steps of a project that completed a 500-foot connection under Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which was caused due to coal ash deposits discovered at the nearby Police Department property.
Friday’s release about the bridge closure said the trail can still be used by pedestrians and bicycle riders, as a two-foot wide temporary bridge will be installed to allow for crossing during the repairs. The town advocates for bike riders to dismount and walk across it instead of riding across it.
This temporary bridge, however, does not meet the standards set by the Americans With Disabilities Act, or ADA. Chapel Hill said in its update anyone using a wheelchair, scooter, and other mobility devices should not use the temporary bridge. Such residents are encouraged to use Chapel Hill Transit’s EZ Rider paratransit service as an alternative to the affected stretch of the Bolin Creek Greenway. The service’s hours of operation from Monday through Friday are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
According to the town, the bridge work is expected to be completed by the end of September. The Bolin Creek Trail also saw recent changes as a mural was painted on the sides of the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard bridge.
