Former Chapel Hill – Carrboro City School Board of Education member Jean Hamilton has been selected by the current board to fill out the current vacancy on the board.
Hamilton was approved by the board on Thursday night and will be sworn in on May 21.
She previously served a full four-year term on the board and was appointed to fill a vacancy once before.
Board chair Joal Hall Broun said that the board wanted to appoint a former board member to fill the current vacancy because the seat is up for election this fall. The short time the appointee will have on the board made a former member an attractive option, Broun said.
Hamilton will replace Margaret Samuels who resigned from her position as board chair earlier this year amid a recall election targeting Samuels and two current board members – James Barrett and Pat Heinrich.
Seats held by Barrett, Heinrich and Samuels were already scheduled to be up for election this fall. Barrett is not seeking reelection, instead choosing to seek the Democratic nomination for state superintendent in 2020. Heinrich has not made his plans known regarding this fall’s election.
