Chapel Hill’s Northside Community is preparing a vehicle parade to celebrate the 101st birthday of one of its cornerstone members on Friday.

Euzelle Smith — a longtime educator, activist and the namesake of Chapel Hill’s Smith Middle School — will be the benefactor of a drive-by birthday celebration planned by community members looking to celebrate her life and the lives of others from the neighborhood.

According to organizers for the event, motorists should gather at the Carrboro ArtsCenter’s plaza Friday evening. The parade route will go from there to traveling east on Main Street before going down West Rosemary Street to North Roberson Street. From there, the parade will circle a few blocks in the Northside neighborhood, taking lefts onto Whitaker and North Graham Streets before returning to Rosemary Street and turning right. The caravan will then turn right onto Sunset Drive and proceed to Nunn Street and Sykes Street.

The parade will end with cars passing Smith’s address on Caldwell Street to wish her a happy birthday.

Smith and her husband, R.D. Smith, served many years in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district. They were both named Town Treasures by the Chapel Hill Historical Society in 2008.

Those hoping to participate in Euzelle Smith’s 101st birthday parade are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and meet at the ArtsCenter starting at 6 p.m.
