After holding community input sessions at the end of January on proposed services, Chapel Hill Transit will hold more around the area in the coming days.

The transit department shared details on the additional opportunities community members have to learn and ask questions about its Short Range Transit Plan, which plans to consolidate and reroute some bus lines.

Chapel Hill Transit said these upcoming sessions will not have formal presentations about the changes, but participants will be able to engage with transit staff, review maps and ask questions about the proposals. Input given at sessions will be used to help the department’s planning team to create final route maps and schedules, according to the department.

Here are the upcoming input session dates, times and locations:

  • Monday, Feb. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Board Room of Carrboro Town Hall
  • Wednesday, Feb. 12, UNC Off-Campus Housing Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (UNC students and staff only) in the Great of the UNC Student Union
  • Thursday, Feb. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carolina Springs (residents only)
  • Wednesday, Feb 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. in Room 109 of Carrboro Town Hall

The proposed changes are meant to improve frequency of buses on major routes as well as maintaining access to various communities, simplifying the bus system and improving weekend service. 23 of the 25 bus lines within the transit system have proposed alterations, with six lines being replaced due to updated routes for other bus lines. The final changes to the plan, which will have the latest community input taken into account, will be shared with the public in late spring.

Chapel Hill Transit drafted the Short Range Transit Plan based on public input gathered in 2017 and 2018. The five-year implementation would service as a service guide for the community to prepare for the longer-term future and provide opportunities to examine the integration of a bus rapid transit line and additional strategic issues.

Chapel Hill Transit’s service changes are expected to begin August 2020. For more information on the system’s Short Range Transit Plan, visit the town’s web page.
