The Town of Chapel Hill has begun its search process to replace longtime town attorney Ralph Karpinos, who retired in February after close to 35 years in that role.

The primary responsibility for the town attorney is to protect the legal interests of Chapel Hill. They also serve as general counsel to the Town and provide advice to the Mayor and Council, Town Boards and Commissions, Town Administration and Town Departments.

Members of the community have an opportunity to be a part of the selection process by applying to serve in an assessment center scheduled for June 18 and 19, where they will view candidates in simulated scenarios that a town attorney will face.

“We put these candidates through the paces,” Chapel Hill Mayor Pam Hemminger said to 97.9 The Hill’s Aaron Keck. “You role-play. You’re given a scenario. And the applicant has to work through the scenario. The different pods that do the assessing will give us rankings and give that information to Council. Council will then further the list down to some final candidates and then have interviews, which will probably happen virtually actually.

“We’re sorry this has to happen during a pandemic,” she added. “But we do have to move on with town business.”

Between three to five community members will be selected to serve as assessors, according to the town. Chapel Hill residents interested in applying to be a part of this process can do so at this link.
