Barry Cozart, a 59-year-old helicopter pilot from Hillsborough, won a prize of $150,000 from a $3 lottery ticket, the North Carolina Education Lottery announced Wednesday.

Cozart had bought his ticket for Monday’s $1 billion Powerball drawing. His ticket matched numbers on four balls and the Powerball for a $50,000 prize, which tripled to $150,000 after a 3X Power Play multiplier.

“Usually when it’s over $100 million I start buying tickets,” Cozart said. “I’m still in shock.”

Cozart claimed his prize on Tuesday. After required federal and state tax withholdings, he will take home $106,516.

Because no jackpot was claimed for Monday’s drawing, Wednesday’s offers a $1.2 billion prize. It’s the second-highest in Powerball’s history and the fourth-highest in U.S. history. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Ticket sales from Powerball and other games raise more than $2.5 million per day for education, with $8.1 million of that going to Orange County in 2021.
